Crockett & Jones just opened a new shop on Jermyn St, after the closing of their first-ever retail store at 69 Jermyn St. not too long ago. While I cannot recall the reason that they closed the original store, my guess would be the lease ended, and/or Crockett has significantly grown and simply needed more space! The latter seems more plausible.
Luckily for the customers of the old shop at 69, they only moved a few places down into the space at 77 Jermyn St. which gives them what looks to be the same amount of space and feel that their shop on 92 Jermyn St. has. It is impressive that Crockett & Jones can carry two shops on the same street, which might take 30-60 seconds to walk from one to the other. I recall when Starbucks opened up 4 shops on one corner in Seattle in the 90’s and there were a lot of doubters. Yet, they crushed it as they knew in a city as rainy as Seattle, people would not want to leave their buildings to cross the street if they didn’t have to. And that was a huge success.
On Jermyn St. you have two main access points for strolling tourists, businessmen, and regular Londoners: South Regent St. and St. James St. Being on both ends ensures that the customers see your shop upon entering the long-ish street, from either side. And if they happen to come from Piccadilly Arcade, well the new position is even more favorable as it is literally across the street from the exit of the arcade.
To celebrate the new shop, Crockett & Jones has also launched a new shell cordovan loafer, called the Yale. The Yale is a new full-strap penny loafer and it is placed on the new 391 last. It is already live on their site so for all of you cordovan lovers, feel free to go have at it!
For those of you in, or around, London, go check out the new shop. I will be there in May and will certainly be doing so myself!
