Historically, I have never been a fan of monkey boots. Until I saw this pair by Don’s Footwear that placed all of the lines in the right spot and nailed that patina to really accentuate the design. One might not really ever think about this, but line placement on the pattern is so crucial to make or break a design. And, for me, the biggest issue in a monkey boot is putting that derby line (the facing) too far forward and making the toe area too small. On top of that perfect placement was this lovely warm patina that plays on lighter and darker browns around the various pieces of the pattern to help the flow of it.
That might all sound crazy to you, but it makes a difference. And you might not be able to explain it when seeing it, but as a designer myself these are the things I look for and will attract me to a pair of shoes/boots. And Don’s Footwear made the perfect job on these to create a pair of monkey boots that I would actually wear myself.
Don’s Footwear by nature is an ‘Elevator Shoe’ company but also makes non-elevator styles should one so request it. This boot falls under their regular styles of shoes, although one could also make it an elevator-style boot. You can see another version here that has two soles and a storm welt. It’s quite a feat that you do not often see and I can imagine that this will be a popular choice for those that like something unique.

I had a chance to meet Allan and saw a pair these in person while visiting Thailand for vacation. These boots are top notch and had I not spent so much money on my vacation (as well as having Allan make me a set of bespoke derbies), I would have had put in a made to order set then and there.
Allan is a passionate guy that is very dedicated to the industry. While his workshop is small (has the opportunity to visit), the workmanship is next to none, especially at the price point.
Looking forward to the final product for my derbies, especially after the second fitting was done.

Not only have I been a fan, but also a customer for the past 10 years of Don’s Footwear. If you really want to have a true bespoke, custom-made, Shu, that not only feels good, but looks phenomenal, you need to have shoes made by Allan Donelly. He is a true gentleman and a scholar. These shoes, like all of Allan Donelly’s work, are a masterpiece. The care, energy and detail that go into Don’s shoes are truly exceptional and emanate from the shoe. You’ll be reminded of this by the compliments and look of fascination on strangers’ faces that you pass throughout the day while wearing them.
These shoes are so nice, you’d think you must keep them in a glass case, mounted on the wall. However, shoes are meant to be worn and these Monkey Boots will age gracefully, gaining character with every scuff and scratch, while fitting like the most comfortable glove you’ve ever worn.

I have been a customer of Don’s Footwear for 5 years and I’d recommend Don’s Footwear to anyone who is looking for a pair of bespoke shoes.
Before I met Allan, I always have had a problem to find shoes with the perfect fit for my feet as my feet are unequal in size and they both are extremely flat. Most of the shoes on the market and even with bespoke shoes from other shop tend to not fit. There will be gaps between my feet and the shoes when I stand or walk.
This is not the case with Don’s Footwear. Every shoes I bought is an exceptional piece of work crafted for my feet. They perfectly fitted to my feet even years after and the reason behind this is no other than the fact that Allan is a true craftsman who is passionate and dedicated to every level of details in a pair of shoes
