How to install sole guards with toe taps looks easy in a short video, but actually takes some level of skill and practice to become truly proficient. I have done a few myself over the years and while not rocket science, it truly takes some finesse to get the perfect job done. Some cobblers/makers are so good it looks as if it was naturally built into the shoe’s sole itself! But that takes a lot of practice to get that good.
Here J.FitzPatrick Footwear (my brand) and Vince’s Village Cobbler collaborate on this short video quickly showing you the steps to add what I like to call the ‘French Sole Treatment‘ aka sole guards with toe taps. This treatment is becoming more common as people want to prolong the life of their soles, especially those who live in large cities and often face the pavement as their adversary.
Vince’s Village Cobbler, who is my neighbor, has been taking care of all of my shoes for the last 4 years, offering a reliable service for anything that has to do with shoe repair. Here you can see him adding the sole guard with toe tap treatment to a pair of ghillie brogues that come from my brand, J.FitzPatrick Footwear. The model is called Russell.
If you are in NYC and need some of this same treatment for your dress shoes, make sure to come down to Soho and find Vince’s off the corner of Prince and Sullivan.

I just had Bedos do the same treatment two a few pair of shoes. Now I see how it is done. Super cool. Thanks for sharing.
